Mavericks Big Wave Surf Contest Pillar Point, California February 8, 2006

The contestants were barely visible on the 40-foot waves ½ mile from shore. 
Hilltop observers enjoyed record high temperatures for this time of year. Weather conditions were perfect for the event. 
Mother Nature provided the main attraction.

Environmental awareness groups such as "Save the Waves" were among the sponsors. 
As the tide drained out, the shore crowd moved onto the tidal flats for a closer view.
